the squares must be done in single crochet & 1 graph square = 1 stitch
even numbered rows will be the wrong side if you are right handed
odd numbered rows will be the wrong side if you are left handed
read the graph from right to left on odd rows, and left to right on even rows
citrus square ♡
each square should measure 5in by 5in
you will need an odd number of squares to fit around the underbust while still leaving some space to lace it up,
(example: underbust measures 30-32in, crochet 5 squares to equal 25in)
chain 17, turn, working into the second chain from hook (chains do not count as stitches)
row 1: sc 16, chain 1, turn
row 2-16: repeat row 1, following along with the graphic above
line up your squares with the right side facing you, using the main color to slip stitch them together vertically
upper portion ♡
this part will be worked in half double crochet (hdc) into the back loops only (BLO) attached to the row of squares as you go, it will be slip stitched into 3 stitches of the squares per each 2 rows of hdc you work
for each 16 stitch square, you will end up with 10 hdc rows of the upper portion worked into it (the 15th and 16th stitch will be reduced to one stitch via slip stitch decrease)
pull up a loop at the far end (far right if right handed or left if left handed) of your length of squares ch 2, turn, working into the second chain from hook
row 1: hdc increase (2) slip stitch into next 3 stitches of the citrus square (do not count the one you pulled up a loop in), turn, do not chain 1, skip the 3 slip stitches, now working into BLO for the entire upper portion
row 2: hdc into first stitch, hdc increase into next stitch (3) chain 1, turn
row 3: hdc increase, hdc into next 2 stitches (4) slip stitch into next 3 stitches of the citrus square (do not slip stitch into the same one you last slip stitched into), turn, do not chain 1, skip the 3 slip stitches
row 4: hdc into first 3 stitches, hdc increase in next (5) chain 1, turn
row 5: hdc increase into first stitch, hdc into next 4 stitches (6) slip stitch into next 3 stitches of the citrus square (do not slip stitch into the same one you last slip stitched into), turn, do not chain 1, skip the 3 slip stitches
row 6: hdc into first 5 stitches, hdc increase in next (7) chain 1, turn
row 7: hdc increase into first stitch, hdc into next 6 stitches (8) slip stitch into next 3 stitches of the citrus square (do not slip stitch into the same one you last slip stitched into), turn, do not chain 1, skip the 3 slip stitches
row 8: hdc into first 7 stitches, hdc increase in next (9) chain 1, turn
row 9: hdc increase into first stitch, hdc into next 8 stitches (10) slip stitch into next 2 stitches of the citrus square (do not slip stitch into the same one you last slip stitched into) slip stitch decrease into the 16th stitch of the current + 1st stitch of the next citrus square (counts as one regular decrease), turn, do not chain 1, skip the 3 slip stitches
row 10: hdc into first 9 stitches, hdc increase in next (11) chain 1, turn
continue this pattern of increasing at the top of every row to continue the slope up one side, until you reach the center citrus square, this is where the triangle cutout will be
starting at the center square for the triangle cutout (to omit the cutout on the center square, simply continue the pattern of increasing and then switch to decreasing after 5 rows)
continue increasing by 1 each row on the outer edge, but on the inner edge stop slip stitching and start decreasing by 1 each row for the next 5 rows, on the 6th row, switch to decreasing by 1 each row on the outer edge while increasing by 1 each row on the inner edge
after the 10th row and for the rest of this portion, continue decreasing by 1 each row on the outer edge while the inner edge goes back to the sequence of slip stitching to attach; continue until you reach the final decrease (2 stitches) do not fasten off, continue down the side of the squares to make the loops for lacing
loops: chain 3, slip stitch into next 4, chain 3, slip stitch into next 4, chain 3, slip stitch into next 4, chain 3, slip stitch into next 4, chain 3, slip stitch into next; slip stitch all along the bottom of the squares, and repeat above for loops on the other side, fasten off
neck strap: chain 130, fasten off; thread it through the peak at the top like shown
back strap: chain at least 160, fasten off; lace it through the holes like shown
