swatch 15 stitches by 16 sc OR 11 hdc OR 8 dc = about 5 inches
a cat square or a 3 round granny square equals about 5 inches
try adjusting your hook or tension to achieve the gauge

create a magic circle, working in the round
round 1: chain 3 (counts as first dc) dc 15 more into magic circle, slip stitch to first dc (16 around)
round 2: chain 3 (counts as first dc) dc into same stitch and 2 dc (increase) into every stitch around, slip stitch to first dc (32 around)
round 3: chain 3 (counts as first dc) dc into same stitch, *dc into next, 2 dc (increase) into next* repeat from * around, slip stitch to first dc (48 around)

if you will be working in one piece for a plain hat, do not fasten off, continue the main round from here
if you will be making a separate piece for the main round using colorwork or seamed squares, pause here or or cut a 36 inch tail, do not fasten off, you will make the main round and then slip stitch the top to the main round
main round ♡
option 1: [solid or scraps] whole hat worked in one piece using 16 rows of 64 single crochet (sc), 11 rows of 64 half double crochet (hdc) or 8 rows of 64 double crochet (dc) on the main round
worked in continuous rounds from the top
at the start of each round chain 1 for sc, chain 2 for hdc or chain 3 for dc and slip stitch to your starting chain at the end of each round
do not fasten off, continue below for the brim
option 2: [colorwork] (you could use colorwork in the previous option if you work graphs upside down; remember to use rows that go back and forth for colorwork rather than working in the round) use rows of 64 for the main round or on separate squares (6 squares 11 stitches wide, 5 squares 13 stitches wide OR 4 squares 15 or 16 stitches wide) using 16 rows single crochet (sc), 11 rows half double crochet (hdc) or 8 rows double crochet (dc) on the main round which will then be slip stitched to the top
you can use mini graphics featured in my other patterns, or make your own graphs that fit into the squares’ dimensions
whip stitch or slip stitch your squares together vertically to create a row and seam the last square to the first square to connect them into a round
slip stitch or whip stitch the top to the main round, fasten off: with 13 stitch squares, just work one extra increase on the top to account for the 65 stitches; with 11 stitch squares work 2 extra increases on the top to account for the 66 stitches; with 15 stitch squares, decrease into the corners where each square meets, this will create 4 decreases to bring the 64 stitches to 60
option 3: [granny squares] stitched together for the main round; you can use a classic granny square made up of 3 rounds so that it has 15 sts on each side (use 4 total)
whip stitch or slip stitch your squares together vertically to create a row and seam the last square to the first square to connect them into a round
slip stitch the top to the main round, fasten off: with 13 stitch squares, just work one extra increase on the top to account for the 65 stitches; with 11 stitch squares work 2 extra increases on the top to account for the 66 stitches; with 15 stitch squares, decrease into the corners where each square meets, this will create 4 decreases to bring the 64 stitches to 60
brim ♡
continue from the solid hat or pull up a loop at the bottom of one square
round 1: chain 3 (counts as first dc) dc into same stitch and 2 dc (increase) into every stitch around, slip stitch to first dc
round 2: chain 3 (counts as first dc) dc into every stitch around, slip stitch to first dc, fasten off
