in april of 2021 I designed a cannabis themed collection including hats, crop tops, pouches, and earrings! they all featured the same appliqué and I would like to share it with you.

materials ♡

-size G/6 - 4mm crochet hook (you can use any hook/yarn size)

-3 ply yarn

-yarn needle, scissors

THE APPLIQUE PATTERN ♡

begin with a magic circle (or a chain of 2 and working into the first chain)

all leaves should be worked only into the back loops of the chain

leaf 1: chain 4, turn, working into the second loop from hook: slip stitch, single crochet, slip stitch. slip stitch to magic circle.

leaf 2: chain 5, turn, working into the second loop from hook: slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, single crochet. slip stitch to magic circle.

leaf 3: chain 6, turn, working into the second loop from hook: slip stitch, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, single crochet. slip stitch to magic circle.

leaf 4: chain 5, turn, working into the second loop from hook: slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, single crochet. slip stitch to magic circle.

leaf 5: chain 4, turn, working into the second loop from hook: slip stitch, single crochet, slip stitch. slip stitch to magic circle.

chain 2-3 for the stem and then fasten off.

you may water block or dry block this appliqué if needed, but if you are sewing it onto something you will be able to shape it with no blocking needed !

for the ‘roll it up’ beanie I cuffed the hat and attached my appliqué through surface stitches only, so it could then be rolled down and concealed

for the ‘doobie boobie’ crop top I attached an appliqué to each side of the holly halter top!

for the ‘puff puff purse’ I took inspiration from the creative names of different strains and came up with fitting colors and stitches for them

  • ‘wedding cake’ uses white and pink and little rows of tulips

  • ‘northern lights’ uses blue and neon green with long drop stitches

  • ‘sunset sherbert’ uses white and warm tones in wavy stripes

the purse sizing is completely flexible; example size is 2o chains wide, and worked as 40 half double crochets in the round for 17 rounds, except the 16th round is worked as [chain 1, skip 1 stitch, half double crochet into next stitch] repeating.

the strap is just a chain worked long enough to go around the opening of the bag at least once, then weaved in and out of row 16 and then attached to itself to close the strap.

I then water blocked a leaf appliqué and attached it to a jump ring & lobster clip to attach to the purse.

for the ‘hemp hoops’ earrings I incorporated recycled materials into the packaging, the round hoops are crocheted over thrifed bangle bracelets.

ROUND HOOPS:

you could also just crochet over top of plain hoop earrings; you will need to find a hook and yarn that will produce an appliqué small enough to fit perfectly in the hoop.

do not fasten off after creating the stem, instead you will place the appliqué in the hoop and begin to slip stitch over the metal.

with your stem at the 6:00 position crochet until you reach leaf 1 at the 3:00 position (a. take note how many stitches that was) then work 1 slip stitch into the tip of leaf 1 and the metal.

continue slip stitches until you reach leaf 2 between 3:00 and 12:00 (b. take note how many stitches that was) then work 1 slip stitch into the tip of leaf 2 and the metal.

continue slip stitches until you reach leaf 3 at the 12:00 position (c. take note how many stitches that was) then work 1 slip stitch into the tip of leaf 3 and the metal.

work number of stitches from note c. until you get to leaf 4, work 1 slip stitch into the tip of leaf 4 and the metal.

work number of stitches from note b. until you get to leaf 5, work 1 slip stitch into the tip of leaf 5 and the metal.

work number of stitches from note a. until you get to the stem, work 1 slip stitch into the first slip stitch on the hoop, fasten off

LEAF SHAPE HOOPS:

for these, I shaped the leaf out of flexible wire, and tried to make two as similar in size as possible. I then started at the bottom and crocheted over the wire, keeping track of the number of stitches on each leaf, and placing a chain 3 picot at each point (picot means chain 3 and slip stitch into the chain 1)

chain 3 for the stem and fasten off, I attached a gem at the bottom as well.
